Powering the Digital Transformation?

How innovation from LSP assists the connected community

digital transformationThe digital transformation will continue to have a phenomenal effect on the physical security industry, bringing       new possibilities for intelligent data in a connected environment and fostering deep insights that keep powered     devices running consistently and reliably.

According to IBM, the digital transformation is “the process of evolving the business to embrace digital.”    Salesforce.com goes further and defines the digital transformation as “the process of using digital technologies   to create new — or modify existing — business processes, culture and customer experiences to meet changing   business and market requirements.”

No matter how you define it, it’s set to change technology in a big way.

LifeSafety Power has focused on evolving its business with power solutions that mirror and complement the digital transformation since our early beginnings. We brought remote system monitoring to power solutions nearly 10 years ago, starting with the award-winning NetLink Network Communications Module. From there we added advanced battery management capabilities with active testing, ushering in new, higher level of guaranteed reliability for installed power solutions. Then, we began our foray into the realm of managed power systems with early predictive monitoring, morphing into complete enterprise power management with the Multi-Site Manager Enterprise—a web-browser based application that manages, controls and analyzes hundreds of LSP networked power systems across multiple locations through one user interface.

For the physical security industry, the digital transformation provides an opportunity to leverage new services to the customer and a competitive advantage. It yields important data from the connected protected premises, Smart Cities and Security Operation Centers (SOC). It’s a contracting edge that adds value to your company and its services, substantially increasing job profitability.

Managed power services are integral to this sea-change and LifeSafety Power has been preparing and innovating for years with this transformative environment in its sights.

Even before digital transformation was a buzzword we were moving in this direction. Innovation and a focus on the systems integrator has been our passion and philosophy from the beginning. Real Possibilities for Managed Power Services

LifeSafety Power has your back, with solutions that keep you profitable

The tide has turned. Systems solutions in the physical security industry are moving to the network and IP-based communication infrastructures. Services are critical to the ongoing success of a systems integrator’s business, especially as project and hardware margins continue to drop.

Recurring monthly revenue (RMR) is the lifeline savvy systems integrators seek to stay profitable, and it can be found in many different technologies, including power solutions. LifeSafety Power continues to address the need for its integrator partners to generate new streams of revenue, and intelligent networking power solutions provide steady income from proactive remote monitoring and management. For the end-user customer, managed power solutions offer a value-added solution that ensures system uptime, integrity and reliability.

As an example, Multi-Site Manager-Enterprise™ controls power solutions through its web-accessible platform, providing security dealers and integrators in-depth analytics so they can continually assess system power operations for optimum operation and guaranteed reliability. They can monitor, assess, maintain and troubleshoot systems remotely, without an expensive service call and site visit. Integrators can provide a wide range of managed power services, like active battery management, with the ability to remotely reboot field devices and manage batteries remotely. LifeSafety Power Managed Power Enclosure June 14 2019

The possibilities to perform managed power services can encompass many physical elements: the main power supply; power system outputs; supervised inputs; and standby batteries. Managed monitoring can include event reports; AC loss notification; service due reminders; overcurrent alert; low-battery warning; and insufficient battery standby. Remote servicing capabilities of power solutions can cover output supervision; battery load testing; remote power cycling; and system health logs/trouble alerts.

With power monitoring also comes the opportunity to create real-time action alerts and reports. Alert formats may include email, XML, web-browser notification or Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). For example, a short circuit or integrated lock that is drawing more or less power than it should is an indication that it’s beginning to fail. In this condition an email alert or SNMP trap (notification) is automatically sent to the integration company or end-user of a potential problem. With continuous power system monitoring comes the opportunity for creating specific action alerts and reports for comprehensive system maintenance and management.

With proactive power management systems and predictive analytics data from networked components, an end user can be informed, ahead of time, of impending lock failure or battery fatigue, offering the systems integrator the ability to replace components in a timely manner.

All these different capabilities from LifeSafety Power provide systems integrators new ways to increase their RMR from managed power services. For more information, contact us today at (888) 577.2898 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

By Jeff Smith, CPP, CDT, Principal and Vice President of TEECOM

One weekend last winter, the access control system malfunctioned at a company’s satellite offices in a California suburb. The first simple solution, as your IT department will tell you with so many modern technologies, was to reset the system by cycling the power off and on again. Unfortunately, there was no one on site who knew where the locked panels were located or had the ability to access the electrical circuit breakers.

An after-hours technician was called, traveled to the site and cycled the electrical power, bringing the system back online and functioning correctly. The company ended up paying hundreds of dollars for after-hours service to implement this simple fix. Could it have been avoided?

Networked power solutions make your security and access control system smarter with historical data, analytics and remote monitoring capabilities

The answer is yes. Today’s networked, intelligent power solutions integrated with access control platforms support the ability to proactively monitor and diagnose potential failures ahead of a problem and to reboot field devices and manage batteries remotely. When integrated natively into the access controller board, the power system reports to and provides alert notifications to the Security Management System (SMS) and can also provide a detailed history and assessment of power. These new power solutions offer building owners and service providers advantages in three important areas:

1. Design

Historically, it required some expertise and a lot more wiring labor to efficiently lay out the wall-mounted access control equipment, requiring three enclosures, one each for system power, access panels and two lock power supplies. Today’s smart power solutions streamline all this to a single enclosure within a smaller footprint and even include rack-mount configurations for IT closets or data centers. They may be preconfigured in the factory with standardized wiring per a specific system manufacturer’s technology. This approach allows consistent implementation across an organization, campus or enterprise location, simplifying installation and future service.

2. Data

When integrated with an SMS, networked power solutions can provide actionable intelligence to building owners and service providers. This intelligence might include alerts about circuits that are drawing too much power or out-of-tolerance battery backup time, or data about the average temperature of circuits, number of times a door has been unlocked, or the number of times a network has failed. For clients managing large systems at multiple locations, this information can provide notification of a pending problem, assist with management of maintenance schedules and enhance predictability on the performance of their access control system.

3. Dollars

Since they’re configured in a factory, with the security system manufacturer’s custom components pre-wired, single-enclosure power solutions cost less overall than power systems installed by a field technician on site. The factory-made approach also improves quality and consistency. By standardizing the product across a client’s organization, services times and maintenance costs are reduced. With this modular approach, when a component does fail, it’s easy to pull the pre-wired connectors out and pop the new component in.

The advantages of networked and IP systems and solutions are clear. This connectivity offers greater control and more data as well as remote monitoring and management capabilities. Power is the heartbeat and lifeline of everything; without it there’s no connectivity. So why not leverage this critical service on the network along with your other systems?

Smart power supplies are a natural extension of the intelligent building and IoT trends, offering clients greater insight into their building’s operations and remote service and triage. It’s the best solution for guaranteed reliability and uptime for clients in every vertical market segment.

When we started our journey, LifeSafety Power already had a greater vision for power. We have worked diligently to change the category from lowly can or enclosure—a static piece of hardware—to an integrated, network-intelligent device that provides greater labor efficiency, cost savings, a higher return-on-investment (ROI) for the user and a tangible new category of managed services for the systems integrator.

1. We provide the data and information users want

LifeSafety Power’s products are designed in line with an industry that is experiencing a metamorphosis from analog systems to everything IP connected. And we have led the way with our power products, which now provide precision data to customers; proactive information they can use for predictive management of access control systems and devices.

We started with a single, pre-fabricated panel, FlexPower® Unified Power, offering electrical and mechanical integration of power, locks and access panels in one streamlined enclosure. Now this might not seem like a big deal to some, but for installers and end users it represents labor and field wiring time savings. In fact, 40% installation savings and 60% wall savings can be achieved with FlexPower Unified Power systems.

2. Our products address skilled labor shortages

Labor is expensive and all too often security integrators are having a hard time filling their ranks with a qualified workforce. According to the National Association of Manufacturers, attracting and retaining a quality workforce was a top-cited business challenge facing manufacturers in 2018. The Security Industry Association, in its 2019 Megatrends Survey, also identified workforce development as a top industry trend for the coming year.

We understand the challenges and have addressed them with ongoing product evolution. Security dealers and integrators can save time in the field if all internal wiring is pre-done, freeing technician’s time for more important issues or projects. Prewiring of access control integrations also promotes system uniformity. That’s where our latest solution, ProWire Unified Power Solutions comes in. ProWire is engineered to turn an integrator’s challenges in the area of skilled labor into an attainable opportunity.

These units allow installers to standardize solutions across campuses, saving training time and installation costs. ProWire also assists in troubleshooting systems, as field wiring is readily accessible in these enclosures, streamlining service and maintenance—another huge cost center for installing companies and their customers.

3. We have your back with new managed power services

LifeSafety Power is innovative and progressive, focused on helping security integrators and end-users succeed with a new breed of intelligent products leveraged on the network for real-time insights. If you haven’t seen our latest video, check it out and listen to Lisa Marie Kelly, Business Development Manager, talk about what this means and the impact to the industry. She discusses the LifeSafety Power transformation and the fact that today, with NetLink™ Network Communication Modules and the award-winning Multi-Site Manager-Enterprise™ (MSM-Enterprise) we can gather specific information to predict and forecast component trouble, like a lock or battery failure. It also provides active battery management, with the ability to remotely reboot field devices and manage batteries. Now, not only do integrators have the benefit of cost savings during their projects, but they gain access to historical data, system operational trends and the ability to leverage remote managed power services for new recurring monthly revenue (RMR).

With the new standard of power performance created by LifeSafety Power’s intelligent solutions, security companies can achieve a 77% increase in installation and troubleshooting efficiency, lower total cost of ownership and networking capabilities for remote monitoring and management of power never before available.

Solving industry challenges such as untrained workers, inconsistences in project equipment orders and scheduling, cost tracking and reducing overruns are serious matters for system integration companies. With LifeSafety Power’s FlexPower Unified Power, ProWire, NetLink and MSM-Enterprise security integrators have profitability and opportunity clearly in focus for the future.

The physical security industry is experiencing phenomenal growth, bolstered by global security concerns and visibility created through deep-pocket mass marketing by large utilities and other entities. Customers understand the value proposition and convenience associated with networked security and the advantages it brings to their facilities. Smart systems that gather data on connected solutions bring new intelligence and information about the protected premises to the end user. Technological change and innovation will continue at even greater speeds—and that means the industry needs to keep up in many different ways to be successful and turn a profit.

What’s the sense of having all that new business pouring in if you don’t have the technicians to complete projects in a timely manner? Are the products you are installing cumbersome and difficult to deploy quickly and successfully? Are they missing key certifications and safeguards the customer is looking for? All these factors can lead to dwindling profit margins and disappointment if you don’t have the right manufacturing partner who has your best interests and these trends in mind.

LSP solves integrator’s pain points

In addition to a lack of skilled labor and qualified technicians there are other costly challenges the security industry needs to overcome, including unanticipated work changes; lack of team communication; inability to finish work on time; project material and equipment ordering disconnect; adapting projects to changes; and keeping costs on target.

The shortage of technicians is so real that it has become a focus of industry trade shows and other educational conferences. It makes completing projects on time and within budget difficult, costing the installing company more money in the end if they have to fix completed jobs or bring in technicians from other jobs with proper competencies. These and other factors ultimately lead to lower margins for installation companies—and the inability to compete effectively in the marketplace.

Systems integrators and security contractors want to be heroes in the eyes of the customer. They want to be profitable on every job, have technicians who can quickly install systems professionally and run a tight ship that can breeze through job specs. LifeSafety Power manufactures products with these end goals in mind. We help reduce project costs and minimize the complexity of an access control installation, while still providing “made in the USA” quality.

LSP helps integrators and end users standardize their installations for consistency in the process. We drop-ship to locations, provide the latest, most current certifications and embed cybersecurity safeguards in networking solutions.

LSP is the inventor and originator of networking power solutions that allow systems integrators to earn recurring monthly revenue from managed power services through remote monitoring and maintenance, giving the end user proactive data that enhances system uptime and reliability and lowers the overall total cost of ownership.

‘Easy does it’ philosophy brings field efficiency

There are a lot of different nuances to effectively installing and maintaining security and life safety systems. Of course, power is the heartbeat of any intrusion, access control, surveillance or automation solution.

At LifeSafety Power, our innovation focuses on streamlining the installation process—because that’s where the bulk of your costs lie. We want to provide a quality solution and help you save time in the field by making things easier. And, sometimes it’s the little things that make a difference. For example, different Mercury resellers use different relays for their lock outputs.  To streamline the wiring process, we recently updated our ProWire Authentic Mercury Security Unified Power Systems from three pin to six pin terminal strips to allow the installer to simply plug into the relay being used without rewiring. ProWire prewires lock and system power connections for simple plug-and-play installation.

As another example, we have engineered easy-to-remove ground wires on the doors of all our enclosures with a pluggable connection so no tools are necessary for installation. Finally, we’ve updated many of the installation manuals in our Learning Center to make your solution seamless, including one on battery wiring, a critical part of reliable battery backup.

Providing the right resources and detailed specification information is an ongoing process that’s core to LifeSafety Power’s philosophy of serving the customer. Our website has many other support facets, such as calculators, Application Notes, PowerProTV how-to videos, self-paced training modules, White Papers, software/firmware downloads, troubleshooting guides and FAQs.
